10 Ways to Save Money at the Movies

Use Price Clubs If you have a  Sam’s Club  or Costco membership, you can save on movie tickets. Head to the consumer service desk and ask about discount tickets – you can usually score them for a few bucks off. I’m not a club shopper, but I discovered that my local grocery store and gas station offer cheaper tickets. I can then save even more by using a  cash back credit card  that offers additional rewards for shopping at these locations. Call around to different stores in your area and you might find a cheaper way to see the same movie that everyone else pays full price for. Go in the afternoon When my kids are rowdy and restless, I usually load them into the SUV and drive to the movies. This is perfect, since matinees cost way less than evening showings. In fact, I can usually purchase all of the tickets for less than $10, which makes it a worthy way to spend my money on something fun for the kids – and something stress-free for me. Call and ask the theat...

Bad movies of 2019

Joker  Todd Phillips' grim - 'n' - gritty take on the origin of Batman's most famous foe took the top prize at the Venice Film Festival, earned the admiration of plenty of critics and directors, and may or may not have received a B- grade in our official review. But it loathed strongly enough by a sufficiently sizable number of contributors to land itself on this list, and so scornful attention must be paid. Somewhere between the toothless attempts at provocation (blacking out the middle two words of a "don't forget to smile!" sign has a strong "Marilyn Monroe Now Going Door-To-Door Trying To Shock People" energy). Its anger is an impotent, irrelevant anger, the rage of a tween. After Good art can come from anywhere, an important truth that unfortunately sometimes encourages crap like   After , a movie based on a YA novel that began as One Direction fan-fiction seemingly inspired by  Fifty Shades Of Grey , which itself was rewritten  Twiligh...

Best movies of 2019

Parasite Bong Joon Ho’s family thriller capped off its triumphant 2019 by placing first on IndieWire’s Critics Poll. The movie world premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it became the first South Korean film to win the festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or. Since then, “Parasite” has became a box office sensation (over $20 million in the U.S. and over $100 million worldwide) and a top Oscar contender in categories such as Best Picture, Best Director, and more. The Irishman Martin Scorsese’s elegiac gangster epic “The Irishman” reunited him with “Goodfellas” stars Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and nearly missed out on the top spot on IndieWire’s Critics Poll. “The Irishman” has been a dominant force in the awards race, picking up Best Picture honors from both the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. IndieWire’s Eric Kohn also named “The Irishman” one of the top films of the year. Marriage Story Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” became a top O...

Movie Genres That Make The Most Money

When you think of the most profitable movies at the box office, you probably think of the Hollywood blockbusters - films that grab headlines because of their huge budgets and equally huge profits, like "Avatar," "Titanic" and "Pirates of the Caribbean." However, when it comes down to it, these aren't the movies that bring in the most return on investment for their respective film studios. Most of the time, movies with smaller budgets provide studios with the most bang for their buck, if the film reaches a  profitable  state. We'll take a look at the top 20 movies that have provided the biggest  return on investment  (ROI) (according to industry info website,  The Numbers ), and the ones that have been the biggest Hollywood flops, to find the movie genre that consistently provides the best returns. After the dollar value of the international gross is divided by the movie budget, this value is divided by two to obtain the percentage  return ; this ...
